DBT Coaching for Parents & Caregivers: FAQ
How is coaching different from the DBT Parents Group?
The main difference is the format and focus. The DBT Parents Group is a structured class where you learn skills alongside other parents. Coaching is a one-on-one service where we apply skills and consider your specific family challenges and goals. Coaching offers a higher degree of personalization and practice.
How is parent coaching different from individual therapy?
While both are confidential, one-on-one services, parent coaching is highly focused on providing practical skills and strategies directly related to your parenting role. The primary goal is to help you become a more effective agent of change within your family system. While your own emotions are addressed, it is all within the context of your relationship with your child and your parenting challenges.
What happens in a typical coaching session?
In a typical session, you might start by discussing a recent challenging situation with your teen. Your coach will help you analyze the interaction using a DBT framework, identify which skills could have been used, and practice applying those skills. You might role-play a difficult conversation, develop a plan for an upcoming challenge, or deepen your understanding of a specific DBT skill like validation or boundary setting.
My teen isn't in therapy at Metro NY DBT. Can I still sign up for coaching?
Yes. Parent coaching is a standalone service available to any parent or caregiver who feels they would benefit, regardless of where their teen receives therapy. The skills you learn can support your teen's work with any child therapist.
