Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) offers critical tools for improving emotion regulation and interpersonal communication. Our Parent & Caregiver DBT intensive program is designed to help you master these essential DBT skills, build healthier communication patterns, and foster a family system where everyone can thrive.
Is This Parent & Caregiver Program Right for You?
Our program is designed for parents and caregivers of adolescents who are struggling with emotional and behavioral challenges. It is an ideal fit if you are looking for a support group environment to learn skills and strategies to better manage:
Your adolescent's intense or unstable moods and emotional outbursts.
Your own stress and emotional reactions to your child's behaviors.
High family conflict and communication breakdowns.
Difficulty setting effective boundaries and limits.
A desire to better understand your child's struggles and support their therapy.
The challenges associated with parenting a teen with symptoms of mood instability, self-harm, anxiety, or oppositional behaviors.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy for parents and caregivers provides a powerful opportunity to learn alongside others going through similar challenges, building a strong foundation of skills in a concentrated timeframe. It’s perfect for those looking to jumpstart a more effective parenting approach or deepen their existing understanding of DBT.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Parent & Caregiver DBT Intensive
I would like to continue with my current therapist outside of Metro. Can I still participate in the Intensive DBT program?
We ask clients to pause treatment with outside providers if they wish to participate in the Intensive DBT Program at Metro. We work closely on a team, which we have found to lead to increased progress towards treatment goals. All clients participating in Intensive DBT treatment will pause with outside therapists for the duration of the 7-week program.
Do I need prior experience with DBT?
No, absolutely not. This intensive is an ideal starting point for parents and caregivers new to Dialectical Behavior Therapy. The program is specifically designed to build a strong foundation from the ground up, teaching all four core skills modules in a structured, supportive way. No prior experience is necessary.
My teen isn't in therapy at Metro NY DBT. Can I still join?
Yes. This program is open to all parents and caregivers who believe these skills would be beneficial for their family, regardless of where their adolescent receives therapy. The skills you learn are universal and can support your teen's work with any child therapist near me.
What is the difference between this skills group and a support group?
While this program offers a powerful community and a strong element of peer support, it is a structured, skills-based training group, not a traditional support group. Each session is led by an expert DBT clinician who teaches a specific curriculum with clear learning objectives. The primary focus is on learning and practicing concrete DBT skills you can apply immediately, rather than on unstructured sharing.
