Therapy for Personality Disorders

Living with the symptoms associated with a personality disorder can mean facing long-term patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that differ from cultural expectations and cause significant distress or impairment. These patterns can profoundly impact your relationships, self-image, and ability to function. At Metro NY DBT Center, we understand the complexities of personality disorders, and we provide expert, evidence-based therapy to help you build healthier, more adaptive ways of being.

Our clinicians are extensively trained in therapeutic models like Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Radically Open DBT (RO-DBT) to address the core challenges of various personality disorders. We offer these targeted mental health services across NY, NJ, & CT.

Understanding Personality Disorders

Personality disorders are not character flaws; they are serious mental health conditions characterized by enduring patterns of inner experience and behavior that affect at least two of these areas:

  • How you think about your self-identify.

  • How you respond to emotional intensity.

  • How you relate to interpersonal relationships.

  • How you control your behavioral impulsivity or patterns of avoidance.

Our team has deep expertise in treating a range of personality disorders, with a focus on those characterized by emotional dysregulation or overcontrol.

Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy for Personality Disorders

  • What is the difference between OCD and OCPD?

While they sound similar, they are very different. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by unwanted obsessions and compulsive rituals performed to reduce anxiety. Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is a personality disorder characterized by a pervasive need for order, perfection, and control. People with OCPD are generally not distressed by their traits and see them as the "right" way to be, whereas people with OCD are very distressed by their obsessions.

  • Is treatment for personality disorders long-term?

Yes, effective therapy for personality disorders is typically a longer-term commitment. These are deeply ingrained patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that have developed over a lifetime. It takes time, practice, and a strong therapeutic relationship to create lasting change. Most individuals should expect to be in therapy for at least a year or more.

  • Can personality disorders be cured?

While "cure" can be a misleading term, individuals can and do achieve significant, lasting change and symptom remission. The goal of therapy is to help you learn skills so that the personality traits no longer cause significant distress or impair your ability to function. Many people who complete treatment no longer meet the diagnostic criteria for their original disorder.

  • How do I know if I have a personality disorder?

The only way to know for sure is to receive a comprehensive diagnostic assessment from a qualified mental health professional. If you find yourself struggling with consistent, long-term patterns of conflict in relationships, an unstable sense of self, or difficulty managing your emotions that affects all areas of your life, it is worth seeking an assessment.
