CBT for Youth (8-18yrs) in NY, NJ, & CT

At Metro NY DBT Center, we understand that young people face unique emotional and behavioral challenges. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) stands as one of the most extensively researched and effective forms of psychotherapy for children and adolescents. This structured, goal-oriented approach focuses on identifying and altering unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors.

CBT targets
a variety of mental health conditions in children and adolescents, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and behavioral issues. Its evidence-based nature and adaptability make it especially valuable in clinical settings.

In CBT, Young People Learn How to:

Identify Unhelpful Thought Patterns

Recognize negative or distorted thoughts that contribute to distress or problematic behaviors. For example, a child might believe, "No one likes me," or an adolescent might think, "I'll definitely fail this test."

Challenge and Reframe Thoughts

Develop skills to question these unhelpful thoughts and replace them with more balanced and realistic perspectives.

Develop Practical Coping Strategies

CBT is an active, skills-based approach that empowers children and adolescents with tools they can use in their daily lives.

How CBT Can Help Your Child or Adolescent

Overcontrol Behaviors

We adapt CBT to be developmentally appropriate. For younger children, therapy often incorporates play, storytelling, and art. For adolescents, we use a more collaborative approach, encouraging self-reflection and active participation in goal setting. The aim is to equip them with skills for problem-solving, emotional regulation, and resilience that last a lifetime.

Our Approach to CBT for Children and Adolescents

Our program is designed to be clear, collaborative, and effective, typically involving 8-20 sessions depending on individual needs and goals.

Insurance, Payment Information, & Fee Structure

Metro NY DBT Center does not participate directly with insurance panels and is considered an "out-of-network"provider. Clients are responsible for payment at the time of service and for submitting invoices to their insurance companies to seek out-of-network reimbursement benefits.

We encourage you to check with your insurance provider about your out-of-network mental health coverage. Some clients discuss "single case agreements" with their insurance. While claim denials can occur, a "Medical Necessity Letter," which we can help discuss, may be useful in the appeals process. Please let us know if we can assist you with understanding this process.
