Frequently Asked Questions About Adult Psychological Assessments

  • Q: What is a psychological assessment and why might I need one?

A psychological assessment is a comprehensive evaluation conducted by a registered psychologist to better understand a person's psychological, emotional, and cognitive functioning. It's more in-depth than a standard therapy session and uses a combination of standardized tests, clinical interviews, observation, and review of background information.

Adults often seek an assessment to:

Obtain a formal diagnosis for conditions

Clarify a confusing diagnostic picture when symptoms overlap.

Gain insight into personal strengths and weaknesses for career or academic planning.

Develop a highly tailored and effective treatment plan.

  • What age group do you assess?

We provide comprehensive psychological assessments for adults (ages 18 and older). We also offer assessments for children and adolescents.

  • How long does the assessment process take?

The timeline can vary depending on the complexity of the questions being addressed. An assessment typically unfolds over several days or a few weeks. We aim to provide our findings and recommendations within three weeks of the final testing session to allow for thorough evaluation, scoring, and report writing.

  • Is the assessment covered by insurance?

Metro NY DBT Center is an out-of-network provider. While we do not bill insurance directly, we provide you with detailed invoices (a "superbill") that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. We recommend you contact your insurance provider to understand your specific benefits for psychological testing.
