Frequently Asked Questions About The Dbt Parents Group
Do I need to know about DBT to join this group?
No, not at all. This group is designed for parents at all levels of experience with DBT. We start with the basics and build from there, ensuring everyone has a solid understanding of the concepts and skills. It's a perfect introduction for those new to DBT and a great refresher for those with some prior knowledge.
How do parent DBT skills help my child?
When you learn to work with your own emotions, communicate effectively, and validate your teen's experience, you create a home environment that is less reactive and more stable. This directly models the skills your teen is learning in their own therapy and makes it easier for them to practice. Research shows that healthy caregiver-teen relationships predict favorable outcomes into young adulthood, so this work is likely to benefit them for years to come.
My teen isn't in therapy at Metro NY DBT. Can I still join?
Yes. This group is open to all parents and caregivers who believe these skills would be beneficial for their family, regardless of where their adolescent receives therapy. The skills you learn are universal and can support your teen's work with any child therapist.
What is the difference between this skills group and a support group?
While this program offers a powerful community and a strong element of peer support, it is a structured, skills-based training group, not a traditional support group. Each session is led by an expert DBT clinician who teaches a specific curriculum with clear learning objectives. The primary focus is on learning and practicing concrete DBT skills you can apply immediately.
